Weekly Learning Review Week Ending: 15th February 2018

Weekly Learning Review
Class:           Year 5                                  Week Ending: 15.2.18
The children’s learning this week was focussed through the theme of ‘Book Week’.  They read ancient Greek stories called fables and they identified how each fable taught a lesson through its characterisation of animals and by including a moral at the end of the fable. Children were given morals to match to each fable when read aloud. They were then asked to interpret what the morals actually meant and how they can be applied and teach lessons through our daily lives. The children planned ‘modern day’ fables and wrote them. Before writing, they co-created  a ‘Success Criteria’-a list of what makes an excellent piece of ‘successful’ writing. The children wrote fables and then had an opportunity to use dramatization and acted them out to an audience. By the week’s end, the children wrote edited versions of the fable  and created a class anthology of fables.
This week, the children have been focussing their learning through multiplication. They commenced the week by multiplying horizontally 3 digits by 1 digit. They consolidated their learning of horizontal multiplication through practice and by the week’s end, the children were able to set out their calculations clearly and multiplied vertically.
This week, the children revised the topics covered so far this year.
Personal, Social, Health, Citizenship Education
The children discussed the importance of being in school on time and how this can affect learning. This discussion reflects the changes to lateness procedures that will take place from Sunday, 25 February 2018.
